Why Filename Matching Doesn't Work
Most "duplicate finder" tools compare filenames. Some compare file sizes or metadata tags. The problem is that the same track can exist under completely different names:
Track - Artist.mp3Artist - Track (Original Mix).mp3Track [Beatport].flac01 Track.wav
Same song. Four different filenames. Zero metadata overlap. A filename-based tool would miss all of these.

What Happens After You Find Duplicates
Finding duplicates is only half the problem. You also need to know which copy to keep.
This is where quality scoring matters. For each duplicate group, you want to see:
- Format: FLAC and WAV are lossless; MP3 is lossy
- Bitrate: 320kbps MP3 > 128kbps MP3
- Peak level: Is the file clipped or too quiet?
- File size: Larger usually means higher quality
- Metadata completeness: Does it have proper tags?
A useful duplicate finder should show the technical context behind each copy so you can decide which one belongs in your working library.
The Safe Way to Clean Up
Never permanently delete tracks from your DJ library. Instead:
- Move duplicates to a separate folder โ review them before deleting
- Send to Trash โ recoverable if you change your mind
- Never modify the originals โ your Serato cues, Rekordbox beat grids, and Traktor metadata should stay untouched
